On March 5, 2023 UCLA and USC had their first match up against each other for the 2023 NCAA beach volleyball season. Going into the match, USC was sitting at 5-0 while UCLA was sitting at 9-0. With both teams going into this game undefeated, the pressure was on.

The first match to conclude was the 2s which was Maggie Boyd and Devon Newberry of UCLA against Madison Sheilds and Madison White of USC. The first set ended at 21-16 with UCLA taking that set. The second set ended at 21-19 with UCLA also taking that set as well as the 2s getting the first win for UCLA and also the first win of the game.

The next match to conclude was the 4s which was Riley Powers and Haley Hallgren of UCLA against Olivia Bakos and Bailey Showalter of USC. The first set ended 21-18 with UCLA taking that first set. The second set ended at 21-15 with USC taking that set and causing a third set. The third set ended at 15-13 with UCLA taking that set and winning the first two games.

The next match to conclude was the 1s which was Megan Kraft and Delaynie Maple of USC against Lexi Denaburg and Abby Van Winkle of UCLA. The first set ended at 23-21 with USC taking that set. The second set ended at 21-18 with USC taking that set as well and giving USC their first win of the day.

The next match to conclude was the 5s which was Delaney Karl and Gabby Walker of USC against Marlie Monserez and Jaden Whitmarsh of UCLA. The first set ended 21-18 with USC taking that set. The second set ended 21-11 with UCLA taking that set and leading to a third set. The third set ended at 15-10 with USC taking that set.

With each team having won twice, it all comes down to the final game which is the 3s. This game was Audrey and Nicole Nourse of USC against Peri Brennan and Tessa VanWinkle of UCLA. The first set ended at 21-15 with UCLA taking that set. The second set was much closer ending at 24-22 with USC taking that set and leading to a third set. The third set ended just as close as the second set at 17-15 in favor of USC. With USC winning this game, that means USC beats UCLA 3-2 and remains undefeated while UCLA gets their first loss of the 2023 season.

The next time USC and UCLA play against each other will be on April 20th so stay tuned to see if UCLA will redeem themselves or if USC will win both match ups. The next game for UCLA is on Friday, March 17th against South Carolina at 10am pacific time in Gulf Shores, Alabama while USC has their next game on Friday, March 17th at 6am pacific time against TCU in Miami Beach, Florida, in the same area and during the same weekend as the 2023 AVP Miami open that starts the 2023 AVP season.
