AVP 2025: East Hampton, New York Tournament
Dear Readers~
Welcome to the next tournament of the 2025 AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) League season. This is stop #4 that took place in East Hampton, New York, which is on the eastern end of Long Island in New York State. The venue they used was the East Hampton Marina and Resort while for the San Diego stop they used a facility at San Diego State and the next stop in Los Angeles will be in the Intuit Dome. This stop in East Hampton lasted for two days, like the other League stops, and took place on June 21st and 22nd. I will be combining both men's and women's into this blog since they only had two games each day for each gender, meaning that they only had eight games during both days of play. If you'd rather see them split into men's and women's or if you like them combined like this, let me know and without further ado, let's explain the difference between the League and previous AVP seasons.
In previous seasons, the AVP stops usually took three days, encompassing the whole weekend, and including finals and semifinals. This season only the stop in Manhattan Beach, California did this as well as the only double elimination tournament of the season (as of the writing of this). The very first stop of the season that took place in Huntington Beach, California and did include finals and semifinals lasted two days but was a single elimination tournament. A big difference in the two is that the league scoring is first to 15 instead of 21, unless they both reach 15 since a two-point lead is required. It used to be that the first two sets go to 21 while the third set goes to 15 (if a third set is needed). The League also goes to 8 cities, which makes a total of 8 teams (one for each city) along with an extra city to host the finals. These finals will be in Chicago on Labor Day weekend. Each host city only hosts four of the eight teams and only has two games for ech gender each day and means that only eight games are played between the two genders unlike in previous years where a duo could play anywhere from two to nine different games in the span of the three day weekend (if it's double elimination). Let's take a look at who's playing in stop #4 here in East Hampton.
Up first we have the women's teams that are made up of the Austin Aces, Dallas Dream, Brooklyn Blaze, and New York Nitro. The first day had the Aces playing against the Dream followed by the Blaze playing against the Nitro. For the Aces, it was Taryn (Kloth) Brasher and Kristen Nuss while for the Dream it was Hailey Harward and Kylie Deberg. The first set ended 16-14 in favor of Dallas while the second set ended 15-9 in favor of Austin. The third set ended 16-14 as well but this time in favor of Austin and giving Brasher and Nuss a 2-1 win over Harward and Deberg. The next game had Lexy Denaburg and Julia Donlin for the Blaze against Megan Rice and Corinne Quiggle of the Nitro. The first set ended 19-17 while the second set ended 15-12, both in favor of Denaburg and Donlin.
For the second day, we had Dallas taking on New York while Austin took on Brooklyn. Dallas ended at 18-16 and 15-12 against New York meaning Harward and Deberg won 2-0 agaist Rice and Quiggle. Brooklyn ended 15-13 and 15-10 against Austin meaning Denaburg and Donlin beat Brasher and Nuss 2-0 to end their time in East Hampton.
Up next is the men's teams. The first day had the Blaze against the Nitro while the Aces played against the Dream. Seain Cook and Brian Miller represented the Blaze while Taylor Crabb and Taylor Sander represented the Nitro. The first set ended 15-4 while the second set ended 15-12, both in favor of Crabb and Sander. The next game had Avery Drost and Wyatt Harrison of the Aces taking on Miles Partain and Andy Benesh of the Dream. The first set ended 15-11 while the second set ended 15-6, both in favor of Partain and Benesh.
The second day had the Aces against the Blaze while the Nitro played against the Dream. Up first was Drost and Harrison of the Aces against Cook and Miller of the Blaze. The first set ended 15-13 while the second set ended 15-10, both in favor of the Blaze and giving Cook and Miller a 2-0 win over Drost and Harrison. The final game of the weekend was between the Dream and Nitro. Partain and Benesh won the first set 15-13 while Crabb and Sander won the second set 15-11. The third set went to Crabb and Sander with 15-12 and a 2-1 victory over Benesh and Partain.
This concludes both the men's and women's time in East Hampton, New York. Up next is the aforementioned Los Angeles and their Intuit Dome for week # 5. The four teams here will be the LA Launch, San Diego Smash, Palm Beach Passion, and Miami Mayhem if those teams interest you. If there's a certain sport or game that interests you, let me know. Also let me know if you prefer the men's and women's games being combined or separated. As of the publishing of this blog, I am currently in California for the 2025 AVP Manhattan Bech tournament so stay tuned for that special one later in year and until next time, Miller out
