AVP 2025: Los Angeles Tournament
Dear Readers~
Welcome to stop #5 of the 2025 AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) League season as we head to Los Angeles, California and their Intuit Dome (home of the Clippers from the NBA if that arena sounds familiar) for today's stop. This stop took place on July 11th and 12th and features the LA Launch, San Diego Smash, Palm Beach Passion, and Miami Mayhem if any of those teams interest you. This will include both the men's and women's games from Los Angeles instead of just one or the other.
For those who don't know, the league is a little different than the previous AVP seasons. The biggest differences include the scoring and the number of venues/events they have this season. The way the scoring goes is that each set goes to 15 unless the two teams get to 15 and neither has a lead of two points or more meanwhile the previous years had the first two sets play to 21 and only the third set went to 15 but they did still have the lead of two points or more in order to win a set as a rule. With each team playing one game on one day and one game on the following day, that means that only 8 games are played overall between the two days and between both genders.
The women's teams will be up first. This includes Terese Cannon and Megan Kraft for the LA Launch, Geena Urango and Devon Newberry for the San Diego Smash, Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson for the Palm Beach Passion, and Molly Shaw and Kelly Chang for the Miami Mayhem. For those who remember a few weeks ago, the San Diego Smash was made up of Geena Urango and Toni Rodriguez but Rodriguez had an injury during that weekend so Urango got a new partner for the season. Let's start by seeing what the first day holds for the women's games.
On the first day, the two games had the Launch taking on the Smash followed by the Passion taking on the Mayhem. The Launch and Smash game ended with the Launch taking the first set at 15-13 while the Smash took the second set at 15-10. The third set ended at 15-8 in favor of the Launch and giving Cannon and Kraft a 2-1 victory over Urango and Newberry. As for the Passion and Mayhem, the first set ended 15-12 while the second set ended 15-10, both in favor of the Passion and giving Melissa and Brandie a 2-0 win over Molly and Kelly.
As for the second day, the games had the Passion against the Launch and the Mayhem against the Smash. Up first was Melissa and Brandie for the Passion taking on Terese and Megan for the Launch. The first set ended 15-12 in favor of Terese and Megan while the second set ended 15-6 in favor of Brandie and Melissa as well as causing a third set. The third set ended at 15-10 and in favor of Melissa and Brandie as well as giving them a 2-1 victory over Terese and Megan. Up next is Molly and Kelly of the Mayhem against Geena and Devon of the Smash. The first set ended 15--10 while the second set ended 15-11, both in favor of Geena and Devon as well as giving them a 2-0 victory over Molly and Kelly.
Next up is the men's games. The Launch consisted of Hagen Smith and Logan Webber, the Smash consisted of Chase Budinger and Miles Evans, the Passsion consisted of Trevor Crabb and Phil Dalhausser, and the Mayhem consisted of James Shaw and Chaim Schalk.
For the first day, the first game was Crabb and Dalhausser of the Passion against Shaw and Schalk of the Mayhem followed by Smith and Webber of the Launch against Budinger and Evans of the Smash for the second game. The first game ended 15-13 and 15-11, both in favor of the Passion and a 2-0 victory for Crabb and Dalhausser. The second game ended 15-11 for the Launch then 15-10 for the Smash followed by 15-11 for the Launch again and a 2-1 victory for Smith and Webber of the Launch.
The second day had the Passion against the Launch for the first game followed by the Mayhem against the Smash for the second game. The first set ended 15-11 for the Mayhem followed by 15-11 for the Smash in the second set and lastly, 15-13 for the Smash in the third and giving the Smash a 2-1 victory over the Mayhem.
