AVP 2025: New York Tournament
Dear Readers~
Welcome back to the next stop of the 2025 AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) League season. Last time we went to the Intuit Dome of Los Angeles, California but this time we go the other side of the country to New York's famous Central Park for stop #6 of this 2025 season. Like all league events this season, this one in New York lasted for two days and took place on July 19th and 20th. The men's and Women's will both be combined in this one but if you'd rather see them separated, let me know. With four games on each day (two for each gender), let's get started to see who comes out on top.
For those who don't know, the league is a little different than the previous AVP seasons. The biggest differences include the scoring and the number of venues/events they have this season. The way the scoring goes is that each set goes to 15 unless the two teams get to 15 and neither has a lead of two points or more meanwhile the previous years had the first two sets play to 21 and only the third set went to 15 but they did still have the lead of two points or more in order to win a set as a rule. With each team playing one game on one day and one game on the following day, that means that only 8 games are played overall between the two days and between both genders. There may be fewer games but the games were much more intense since the athletes had more energy compared to playing multiple games over the usual three day tournaments in previous years (Manhattan Beach, CA in mid-August was the only tournament so far this season to do the format of previous years). Now let's get ready for stop #6 in New York City.
The four teams that competed in New York include the Austin Aces, New York Nitro, Palm Beach Passion, and San Diego Smash. There are four other AVP teams, making 8 teams total, that are competing for each gender in the 2025 League. Let's start with the women's weekend then we'll see how the men did.
For the women, we'll start with the first day. The first game was between the Austin Aces and the New York Nitro. For Austin we have Taryn Brasher and Kristen Nuss (they recently made it to the semifinals of the Manhattan Beach Open I previously talked about so stay tuned for that blog if it interests you) while Corinne Quiggle and Megan Rice played for New York. The first set ended 15-12 in favor of New York while the second set ended 21-19 (don't forget you need a lead of two points or more to win a set) in favor of Austin and causing a third set. The third set ended at 15-5 in favor of Taryn and Kristen, giving them the 2-1 victory they needed to win for the day. The second game had the Palm Beach Passion against the San Diego Smash. This game had Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes for Plam Beach while Geena Urango and Devon Newberry play for San Diego. For those who haven't had a chance to read the coverage of the stop in San Diego, Geena's original partner, Tori Rodriguez, sustained an injury so as a result, is out for the rest of the 2025 season. As for Geena and Devon, they unfortunately didn't do so well in New York because Brandie and Melissa won 15-13 and 15-10 for both sets and coming out 2-0 against Geena and Devon.
For the second day, it was Palm Beach against Austin and San Diego against New York. For the first game, Melissa and Brandie won the first set 15-13 while Taryn and Kristen won the second set 15-9. For the third set, the set ended 15-12 in favor of Taryn and Kristen and giving them a 2-1 victory over Melissa and Brandie. The final women's game was also the last game of the weekend. This game had Geena and Devon against Corinne and Megan. The first set ended 15-13 in favor of Corinne and Megan while the second set ended 15-10 in favor of Geena and Devon, causing a third set. the third set ended 15-11, also in favor of Geena and Devon, giving them a 2-1 victory over Corinne and Megan.
Up next we have the men's teams. The first game was Austin against New York followed by Palm Beach against San Diego. The first game had Avery Drost and Wyatt Harrison for Austin while Taylor Crabb and Taylor Sander played for New York. The first set ended 15-11 while the second set ended 15-12, both in favor of Crabb and Sander. The second game had Phil Dalhausser and Trevor Crabb for Palm Beach against Chase Budinger and Miles Evans for San Diego. The first set ended with the same score as the second set: 15-12 and both in favor of Crabb and Dalhausser and giving them a 2-0 win over Evans and Budinger.
For the second day, it was San Diego against New York followed by Palm Beach against Austin. The first game ended 15-10 in favor of San Diego followed by 15-13 in favor of New York and causing a third set. The third set ended 15-12 in favor of San Diego and giving them a 2-1 victory. The final men's game of the weekend was between Palm Beach and Austin. The first set ended 15-13 followed by the second set ending 15-7, both in favor of Palm Beach and giving them a 2-0 win over Austin.
This concludes the stop in New York's Central Park for both the men's and women's games. Up next we head to the capital of the Lone Star State, Austin, Texas and their H-E-B Center that happened on August 1st and 2nd for stop #7. These four teams will be the New York Nitro, LA Launch, Miami Mayhem, and Austin Aces if you are cheering for any of those teams to be in the championships in Chicago come Labor Day weekend. If there's a certain sport or game that interests you, let me know an also let me know if you prefer seeing the men's and women's results separate or if you like them better together. As of the writing of this blog, I recently returned from the AVP stop in Manhattan Beach, California so stay tuned for that special edition later in the year to find out who I met and what all happened during that weekend and until next time, Miller out
