#6 Stanford @ #1 Nebraska 8-24-2025 WVB
Dear Readers~
Welcome to the first blog of the 2025 NCAA Division 1 Women's Indoor Volleyball Season. The first game I will be covering has #1 Nebraska taking on #6 Stanford at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, the capital of Nebraska, as part of the AVCA First Serve tournament. This is not technically Nebraska hosting Stanford, it's more of a neutral tournament with neither being the home team. This game took place on Sunday, August 24th at 2:30pm Central Time. This is Nebraska's second game of 2025 after a previous 3-1 win against #3 Pittsburg while Stanford is coming off of a 3-1 victory of their own against #16 Florida. With this being the second of only two games each would play here in Lincoln to start their season, let's see who can go 2-0 to start their 2025 season since they both won their first game.
For those who have seen my coverage of the NCAA beach games back in the spring, I explained the difference between the beach and indoor games. For those who don't know, the way indoor works is you have to win 3 sets, whether it be all 3, or 3 of the 4 or 5 sets that are played. As for the scoring, for the beach, it's played first to 21 while indoor is played first to 25 and both require a lead of two points or more for the set to conclude. Unlike the beach game, you can switch players in and out, like in basketball for example, and each team gets two time outs per set but with beach you're not switched out and you only get one timeout for each set per team. Enough about the beach game, let's get into this indoor game from Nebraska's capital.
The first set ended 25-13 in favor of Nebraska while the second set was much closer at 25-19, also in favor of Nebraska and giving them a 2-0 lead over Stanford. The third set ended at 25-14 in favor of Nebraska and giving them the 3-0 win they needed for the victory over Stanford. This means Stanford starts their season off at 1-1 while Nebraska is 2-0.
Now that we know how the game ended, let's see who some of the top athletes were of the game. There will be 5 different stats discussed: Kills, Aces, Blocks, Assists (usually held by a setter), and Digs (usually held by a DS (Defensive Specialist)/ Libero). Starting off with the leader in Kills, we go to Nebraska's top three. They are Allie Sczech with 12, Rebekah Allick with 11, and Harper Murray with 10. For Stanford, they were led by Elia Rubin with 8, Ipar Kurt with 7, and Erika Sayer with 5. When it comes to Aces, Stanford only had one that was gotten by Lizzy Andrew while Nebraska also only had one and that was earned by Teraya Sigler. Blocks are up next and the leader was Nebraska's Rebekah Allick with 5, Andi Johnson with 4, and Bergen Reilly with 3. Stanford was led by Logan Parker with 2 while Erika Sayer and Lizzy Andrew each had 1. The leader in Assists goes to the previously mentioned Bergen Reilly, of Nebraska, with 36, while Stanford was led by Taylor Yu at 15 and Logan Parks with 10. Digs is the final one we have to cover. The leader goes to Stanford's Spencer Etzler with 15 while Nebraska was led by Olivia Mauch and Laney Choboy, each with 12.
Now that we've covered this game, let's see when each team will play next. The next game for Nebraska will be on September 16th against Creighton at Omaha's Chi Health Center in Nebraska's largest city, Omaha, at 6:30 pm Central Time if you'd like to tune in. As for Stanford, their next game will be at home at their Maples Pavillion in Stanford, California as they host Hawaii. This game will be at 6:30pm Pacific Time if you'd like to watch.
This concludes the first game of the 2025 indoor volleyball season. This is the only time these two are scheduled to play each other this season. Do you think they'll match up against each other for the national championship bracket or will they have to wait until the fall of 2026 for another match up? This concludes the first game of 2025 so stay tuned for the next game as I cover Nebraska taking on Kentucky for a special game that took place in Nashville, Tennessee so stay tuned for that game coming out next. If there's a certain school or matchup you'd like covered, let me know and until next time, Miller out
