#22 USC @ UCLA 10-11-2025 WVB
Dear Readers~
Welcome back to another game of the 2025 NCAA Division 1 Women's Indoor Volleyball season. This week's game is the crosstown rivalry between #22 USC (University of Southern California) and an unranked UCLA (University of California Los Angeles). This game took place at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles (specifically the Westwood neighborhood). UCLA is coming off of a loss to #13 Purdue and unranked Indiana followed by a win against #14 Minnesota. USC on the other hand is coming off of a loss to Indiana and #13 Purdue as well along with a win against an unranked Oregon. Going into the game, USC has a record of 11-4 while UCLA has a record of 9-6.
For those who have seen my coverage of the NCAA beach games back in the spring and my previous indoor games this fall, I explained the difference between the beach and indoor games. For those who don't know, the way indoor works is you have to win 3 sets, whether it be all 3, or 3 of the 4/5 sets that are played. As for the scoring, for the beach, it's played first to 21 while indoor is played first to 25 and both require a lead of two points or more for the set to conclude. If a fifth set is needed, the teams play first to 15 instead of 25 but the lead of two points or more is still enforced. Unlike the beach game, you can switch players in and out (the NCAA only gives you 15 per set so you have to use them wisely with 6 players on the court), like in basketball for example, but with beach you can't switch them out and you only get one timeout for each set per team as to where NCAA indoor gets two timeouts per set for each team since they generally play longer sets. Enough about the beach game, let's get into this indoor game from the Los Angeles suburb of Westwood, squeezed in-between the 405, I-10, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica.
The first set ended at 25-21, in favor of UCLA. The second set was a little closer, ending at 25-22 and also in favor of UCLA. This was also the closest set of the game. With UCLA up 2 sets to USC's none and only one set away from victory, USC needed to step up their game. The third set would end with the biggest gap in the scores. It would end at 25-15 and also in favor of UCLA. This gives UCLA the 3-0 victory over USC and give them a record of 10-6 while USC now has a record of 11-5.
Let's look into the leaders of each team. When it comes to stats, we will be looking at kills, aces, blocks, assists, and digs. The leader in kills goes to UCLA's Cheridyn Leverette with 14, Eliana Urzua with 11,and Marianna Singletary with 8. The leaders for USC were Adonia Faumuina, London Wijay, and Mia Tvrdy, each with 7. The leader in aces is actually a tie since each player I'll be listing only got one ace. For USC there was London Wijay and Abigail Mullen while UCLA had Carly Hendrickson and Kate Duffey. The leader in blocks goes to UCLA's Marianna Singletary, with 6, while the leader for USC was Adonia Faumuina, with 5. The leader in assists goes to USC's Reese Messer with 31, while UCLA's Kate Duffey wasn't far behind with 30 of her own. The leader in digs goes to UCLA's Kate Duffey and Lola Schumacher, each with 11, while London Wijay led USC with 9 of her own. The leader that showed up the most out of the 5 stats is USC's Outside Hitter London Wijay, who showed up in 4 of the 5 stats listed above. She had 7 kills, 1 ace, 1 assist, and 8 digs. The athlete that showed up the most for UCLA was setter Kate Duffey, with her name on 3 of the 5 stats listed above. She had 1 ace, 30 assists, and 11 digs.
With today's game completed, let's see who they'll play next. For USC, their next game will be on Saturday, November 1st against Minnesota at the Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minnesota. UCLA will play their next game on Sunday, November 2nd as they host Washington at Pauley Pavilion.
